Core Values

Brief History

Minot’s cherished zoo began modestly on April 9, 1914, as Riverside Park Zoo, starting with just 24 animals—12 fox squirrels and 12 gray squirrels.

In 1920, the zoo acquired its first large mammal, a male American bison. The following year, it built its first permanent structure, the Zoological Building, which still stands today and serves as the zoo’s aviary.

Riverside Park was renamed Roosevelt Park in 1922, in honor of former President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt Park and Roosevelt Park Zoo became independent entities in 1970.

From its humble beginnings to today, the zoo has seen remarkable transformations. Read the full history by clicking here.

Greater Minot Zoological Society

The Greater Minot Zoological Society is dedicated to supporting Roosevelt Park Zoo’s efforts to provide a quality zoological park for the enjoyment and education of its visitors through educational programs and displays, conservation awareness, promotion and fund-raising.

The Greater Minot Zoological Society, formerly known as the Minot Zoo Crew, was originally established to provide new homes for the zoo’s large cats. Today, the society is led by a dedicated board of volunteer community members who continue to support and enhance the zoo’s mission.
