Zoo Director – Roosevelt Park Zoo

The Minot Park District is currently looking for a qualified candidate as Zoo Director for the Roosevelt Park Zoo. The Roosevelt Park Zoo is a department of the Minot Park District in Minot, ND. The Zoo is an AZA accredited facility with a diverse collection on a 20 acre park-like setting along the Souris River. The zoo has been in existence since 1920 and is well supported by the community and region. Minot is a growing community with a current estimated population of 50,000, and is home to a large Air Force base just to the north of the city. Minot is an excellent place to raise a family, with an excellent school system, strong economic conditions, as well as many recreational and cultural activities. Primary duties and responsibilities:

Oversees and coordinates the Zoo's daily operations including administration, collection management, public education, and building and grounds maintenance. Monitor and ensure the Zoo and animal collections are properly maintained and provide for the enjoyment and education of the public. Direct the development and implementation of short and long term plans for projects in the Zoo including construction, building and grounds maintenance, and/or animal transactions. Develop and administer the Zoo budget, monitor and authorize expenditures. Supervise and participate in fundraising activities; Secure and administer grant funding. Hire, supervise, train and monitor performance of assigned personnel; ensure staff compliance with Zoo policies, procedures, and safety practices. Oversee the collections veterinary health functions. Monitor and ensure compliance with all Federal and State laws, regulations, rules and standards pertaining to zoo management and exotic animal care. Coordinate inspections and maintain all required permits and accreditations necessary for the operation of the Zoo. Serve as a spokesperson for the Zoo and deliver presentations to community groups and organizations regarding zoo operations. Assist with and participate in special events and promotional activities for the Zoo. Coordinate with other District departments in planning and implementing zoo projects. Attend meetings and/or serve on committees pertaining to zoo management, construction, and development.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Zoology, Veterinary Medicine, or related field, AND five years experience directing zoo operations and working with exotic animals; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of zoology and veterinary medicine
Zoo Operations and management principles
Regulations and standards governing zoo management including AZA accreditation standards
Exotic animal care principles and processes
Buildings and grounds maintenance principles and practices
Processes for developing and implementing budgets
Supervisory principles, practices, and methods

Required Skill in:
Directing and coordinating zoo operations
Ensuring the Zoo's collection is properly cared for and facilities are appropriately maintained
Maintaining compliance with regulations and standards governing zoo management
Developing and implementing zoo plans, policies, procedures and programs
Overseeing and coordinating the Zoo's veterinary health function
Serving as a spokesperson for the Zoo and interacting with the public
Developing and administering budgets and monitoring expenditure
Supervising, leading, and delegating tasks and authority

Salary Range: $60,016 to $83,076 depending on qualifications and experience, full benefit package
