FOUND IN WILD: Rain forests of Sumatra and Malaysia

SIZE AND DESCRIPTION:
  • The Siamang Gibbon is three feet tall, but its arm spread is five feet. It folds its arms over its head to keep them from trailing on the ground.
  • Their throat sac enlarges to amplify its call over long distances.
  • Hands are cup-shaped for gripping.
  • Legs are strong; uses back legs to walk upright.
DIET (ZOO): fresh fruits and vegetables
DIET (WILD): mainly fruits and leaves

INTERESTING FACTS:
  • The ape hates water and cannot swim. When drinking, it usually cups the water in its large hands.
  • The Siamang has binocular vision, which allows it to focus ahead on the next branches to grab.
  • Grooming is a major social activity that strengthens the family bond.
  • They live in small, close-knit family groups consisting of an adult male, female, and two or three youngsters.
  • They live high up in treetops, swinging from tree to tree.
  • They sleep sitting upright at night in the high branches.
