FOUND IN WILD: mainland Canada, Canadian Arctic Islands, Greenland

SIZE AND DESCRIPTION:
  • Head and body length: 6-1/2 to 7 feet
  • Shoulder height: 5 feet
  • Weight: 600 – 800 pounds
  • Outer coat: dark brown, coarse guard hair with inner coat being fine, soft, dense wool, which is valuable
DIET (ZOO): hay, pellets, browse
DIET (WILD): grasses, mosses, willow and pine shoots

INTERESTING FACTS:
  • Horns in both sexes are broad, curve downward, and nearly meet in the middle of the skull
  • A defensive circle is formed by the herd with the calves inside as protection against wolves.
  • Musk oxen have very bad tempers
  • They look like a cross between a cow, sheep, and bison; however, the musk ox is not related to any of these.
  • They are left over from the Ice Age
  • Gestation: 8 months; babies weigh 20 pounds at birth.
  • Live in bands of 5 to 100 or more
