Found in Wild: Flamingos can be found in Africa, South America, parts of Asia and in the southeast sections of Florida. The flamingos at the zoo are Chilean flamingos. They are found in South America, from Ecuador through Argentina.

Size and Description:
  • Flamingos are large birds with pink plumage, long necks, and long legs with webbed feet.
Diet (zoo): shrimp mill
Diet (wild):
aquatic invertebrates

Interesting Facts:
  • When feeding, the flamingo hangs it head down with its eyes pointed backward between its legs.
  • Flamingos normally sleep standing on one leg.
  • Flamingos must eat food containing pink or red pigment (carotenoids) in order for their feathers to maintain a pink color.
  • Flamingos fly in long lines with their necks and legs stretched out straight.
