Size and Description:

  • Second largest bird in the world. The Ostrich (from Africa) is taller
  • Flightless bird which uses its powerful legs to run and fight enemies.
  • Emus have 3 toes on each foot
  • Adult males weigh about 90 pounds.
Diet (zoo): emu pellets
Diet (wild): leaves, seeds and insects

Interesting Facts:
  • Small wings are hidden in its drooping, hairy plumage.
  • The male emu incubates the eggs and guards the young chick until they can fend for themselves.
  • Chicks are striped at birth, but lose these markings as they grow older.
  • Can travel at speeds up to 30 miles per hour.
  • Have rather nasty dispositions.
  • Will eat almost anything shiny: watches, bottle caps, glass, etc. The metal stays in their gizzards.
  • Eggs are blue in color when first laid, then change to a green color when incubated.
